The official X accounts of top celebrities were recently hacked in an attempt to promote crypto scams. This development has raised the need for appropriate preventive measures and security in the crypto ecosystem.
Crypto Scam on Celebrities X Accounts Unveiled
Autism Capital, a media outlet for Fintech and crypto news reported that Caitlyn Jenner’s X account was amongst those that were compromised. In a video, Caitlyn Jenner appeared to have “released a statement” about her coin. Autism Capital believes the video was produced with Artificial Intelligence (AI), pointing out glitching from her facial artifacts.
“The Caitlyn Jenner hack is a very well organized pump and dump scam. They posted across all her socials, they had deepfake videos ready to go, they worked alongside scammer crypto influencers to host a space for the coin, had a fake “manager” appear. They’re hitting other smaller celebrities now too. STAY SAFE.” Autism Capital wrote.
In crypto, a pump-and-dump scam occurs when perpetrators create a large amount of a relatively unknown cryptocurrency. They cash out when unsuspecting victims buy the digital assets at inflated prices. As of Sunday, the Caitlyn Jenner hack coin has already amassed over $100 million in trading volume.
While the community awaits official reports from Jenner, pseudonymous crypto trader Gigantic Rebirth, popularly known as GCR also got hacked. Scammers used GCR’s identity to pump the price of the ORDI token after opening large short positions on Binance and OKX exchanges. This comes only shortly after Binance contributed to the asset recovery of €11.4 million in a major online scam ring.
Should X.com be Responsible for the Hack?
In response, GCR told his followers to “ignore everything” that is coming from his social media channels. GCR claims an X.com employee was bought off for the hack to occur. GCR claims that they increased security after learning about the potential hack approximately two months ago.
Despite this, the pseudonymous traders say it was impossible to ensure security if an X employee had received a bribe for admin access. GCR concluded by pleading with Elon Musk, owner of X to tidy up his organization.
